DA Refuses to Charge Officers in Cho Homicide Case

posted July 9, 2008

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office decided that two cops had justifiably shot and killed Michael Cho, a young Korean American student, because he had a tire iron. Michael Cho, who had graduated from UCLA, was shot eleven times last New Year’s eve in La Habra. Though the cops had pepper spray and Tasers, District Attorney Tony Rackauckas called it “a justifiable homicide.” Surveillance tapes had shown the police chasing Cho as he walked away after confronting the police.

The local Korean American community through the Korean American Advisory committee called out the bias in the DA’s investigation.

The Cho family filed a civil lawsuit against the La Habra City and the officers on July 3rd.
