Shut Up II - Pathetic English-Only Commencements in La.

posted 6/30/08

How ridiculous is this? School officials in Terrebonne Parish, LA are considering a policy banning any part of a commencement speech not in English.

Cindy Vo, co-valedictorian at Ellender High School, set off a firestorm by directing one sentence in their commencement addresses last month in Vietnamese. It was directed toward Cindy Vo’s parents, who do not speak English. Cindy than translated the sentencing about being your own person. Hue Vo, her cousin and co-valedictorian also used Vietnamese phrases in the same manner. First, Vietnamese and soon, who knows, people might start using French in Lousiana.

A committee is being formed to consider the ban and other ideas.

Rickie Pitre, an education board member said, “I don’t like them addressing in a foreign language. They should be in English.”
